Beginner's Guide To Brewing Great Beer Hop Additions

Depending on the style of beer you are brewing you will have up to three hop additions. Each is labeled according to when they are to be put into the boil. Some styles do not use an Aroma or Flavor Hop addition. If it isn't included in your ingredients kit, then it doesn't belong in your beer. Included in your kit is a second Muslin Bag that is good for putting the hops in. Using this bag will help to contain the hops so you can easily remove it at the end of the boil.

Types of Hops

  1. Bittering Hops - These are measured according to their Homebrew Bittering Units (HBUs), and should be added into the wort as soon as it comes back up to a boil. They should be boiled for 60 minutes total.
  2. Flavor Hops - These are measured by weight and are generally added for the last 10 - 20 minutes of the boil (depending on the recipe). Higher quality hops are used for flavoring, and they give a fresh hop taste that isn't boiled out.
  3. Aroma Hops - These are measured by weight and are added for the last minute of the boil. They are only added to beers that are intended to have a hoppy smell.
